The Story Behind the Original William Morris Bird and Yare Designs

The original William Morris Bird design was a woven wool tapestry created for the walls of William Morris’s drawing room at Kelmscott House in Hammersmith, London. The Bird design was registered in 1878 the year he moved into the house, where he lived for the rest of his life.

Whilst the intricate Yare was a printed cotton design conceived later, in 1892.  Block printed at Morris’s Merton Abbey factory, Yare features scrolling leaves amidst coloured flowers on a dark background.
